Karl Reisman One of the most beautiful spots I know on this earth is Goumois, in the valley of the Doubs, in the Jura of NE France. The bird calls echo off the rocks of the valley walls, and the air is totally clear, and the green is green. Here is a photo (- the valley walls) —

Karl Reisman “The median age of entry into the sex industry in America is between 12 and 14 years old. And partially because of the use of the word “pimp” to glorify men in music videos and popular culture, many girls grow up thinking of a pimp as someone who is cool, rich, and sexy, rather than someone to be feared.” (Change.org)

This means that one half of all women (people, boys?) entering the sex “industry” are 13 and YOUNGER.
In a country that professes to be shocked by child abuse.

Karl Reisman While the Roman Catholic church seeks steadily to avoid responsiility for sex between men in authority (priests) and boys, it also declares that Mary was in a state of “perpetual” virginity ( ??? ) – and viciously attacks the psyches and well being of young girls and women who step outside its guidelines.

Karl Reisman “Marian Wright Edelman writes that our schools are once again becoming isolated by race and class.” Which does not look promising for President Obama’s goals for improving education nationally.

Karl Reisman Bauman, Zymunt 44 Letters From the Liquid Modern World ” ‘This liquid modern world of ours cannot keep its shape for long. – How are we to derive meaningful messages?’ – a “liquid” modernity: a state of constantly changing circumstances and shifting priorities that make it difficult for individuals to have the time or …frames of reference to organize their lives.”

Karl Reisman Nicholas Sarkosy to the students at Columbia – “Of course if you come to France and have some health difficulty, or you get in a crash or something, you will not be asked for your credit card before you are rushed to hospital.”

Karl Reisman Our souls are created and defined by what we love intensely — and I am a sentimentalist, so I want to share this music with you – The Lass of Patie’s Mill, played by the wonderful Palladian Ensemble (fixed link – I hope)

This tune appears in John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera but it’s thought to be a sixteenth century air with Italiian influence, written by Mary Queen of Scots’ secretary before he was murdered at Holyrood, but the tune may be older than that.

Karl Reisman Talking to doctors & other medical types since I put up these last posts I have discovered that all these people think that patients ought to be able to fight for their needs and rights as lawyers doctors and business people do. So they take NO steps to protect the traditional obedient people who follow orders and exp…ect to be treated fairly. And everybody knows this exploitation is happening on a massive scale.

Karl Reisman This may take a few entries to write. Do expand the entries. My friend checked into the emergency room with 60 over 39 blood pressure – she paid 500 dollars up front because they said that would cover everything. She earns her living at hard manual labor and has no insurance. They knew that.

Karl Reisman The doctor said she needed a catscan of her heart. She is Latin and follows orders from official people like doctors and nurses. No one discussed costs. These people are worse than used car salesmen. Then the doctor never got around to reading the results and they kept her uselessly in the hospital for two more days re…fusing to release her until the doctor read the results. He just didn’t bother.

Karl Reisman For the last few weeks I have been living inside the meditative space of Curzio Malaparte’s living room on Capri – or at least of a picture of it by Karl Lagersfeld on my desktop. A wonderful emptiness – in spite of the sofa at one end beside the door,
With a mottled continuity across all the surfaces to muddle boundaries.

Karl Reisman Don’t mind the tone of this thing – just enjoy it – but I have reached an age at which the quantity of lying in our environment becomes ever more visible. Or perhaps I should have seen it 60 years ago. Some peoiple have the unfortunate life experience to do so – but then build a life on it. So I ask what is the differ……ence between a believer and a liar? (see next)

Karl Reisman And all this is happening in an environment in which words are dissolving. Example: someone just said in the 1900 time period when they meant to say in the year 1900. Only they either forgot or never learned to say that.

Karl Reisman As Shelley Anderson suggests, war and gender are intimately related. Gender lies at war’s heart and the conduct and impact of war are equally gendered. Although conflict transformation is based on values traditionally regarded as ‘feminine,’ it struggles to implement them in a world shaped by masculinity.

Obama appears to be about talking nice and promoting illusions. I don’t think he really stands for anything. The military have certainly told him to get lost. When push comes to shove in legislation, he washes his hands of the matter and says it all up to Rahm.

Karl Reisman The blizzard of the world Paul Kingsnorth, 4 February 2010
This is the most eloquent environmental piece I have seen.
It teallly calls us to have a reaction. What is yours?

The exhaustion of the planet and existing ways of life presents a creative challenge: exploring “uncivilisation”. Paul Kingsnorth introduces the Dark Mountain Project.
